RUE DES TROIS PORTES

Welcome to Rue des Trois Portes!  This charming and spacious (63m2) one-bedroom / two-bathrooms duplex apartment is located just one block from the Seine and just 300 steps to the cathedral of Nôtre Dame.

The apartment is one block from the oldest church in Paris, St. Julien des Pauvres, which marks the beginning of the busy pedestrian streets of the Latin Quarter. It is also one block from the Place Maubert, famous for its frequent open-air markets...

... and three blocks from the legendary intersection of the Boulevard St. Michel with the Boulevard St. Germain. Within easy walking distance of the Panthéon and the Mouffetard, the Île de la Cité, the Louvre, the île Saint Louis and the Marais, it is hard to imagine an apartment more centrally located in Paris.

Surprisingly, there is very little vehicular or pedestrian traffic on the street itself, which dates to 1202, making the apartment reasonably quiet. Located on the second and third floors (European, with elevator) of a traditional 17th-century building, the apartment is bright, looking south to the picturesque corner of the rue LaGrange and the rue Dante.

The apartment has a secure digicode entry system and separate entrances on each floor. An antique circular staircase links the bedroom on the second floor to the living/dining/kitchen on the third. Each floor has a full bathroom. There is a king-size bed with a fine, Japanese-style, futon mattress on the second floor and a full-size sofa bed on the third, making this an ideal unit for one or two couples – or a small family of, say, four. (However, the owners advise that the open, circular staircase - though charming - could be dangerous to children under four years of age or so.)  Double-glazed windows throughout the apartment help to reduce heating costs and any street noise.  (We no longer hear the garbage trucks in the morning.)

The primary entrance, on the third floor, leads into a hallway - both to a spacious closet and to an open living and dining area. The living room has a leather sofa that easily converts to a comfortable bed for two. A folk-art armoire from the Spanish Pyrenees looks like it might be out of North Africa. In this armoire is a CD player with an eclectic selection of jazz, classical and world music. In the same armoire, you will find some games and extra linens for the sofa-bed. Additional linens and a small dresser can be found in the entry hall closet. An antique glass bookcase offers a nice collection of guidebooks on Paris and France, as well an assortment of art books and a miscellany of English language novels. You can settle into the 1930’s Art-Deco club chair by the circular staircase to read them.

A handsome Balinese dining table seats six, with capacity to comfortably seat eight.

The American-style kitchen comes fully equipped, with a Miele dishwasher, a four-burner electric stovetop, microwave and regular ovens, coffee maker, electric tea kettle, toaster and all pots, pans, cutlery and dishes.

There is additional kitchen storage in an antique Chinese buffet. There is a utility closet next to the kitchen with a ladder, vacuum cleaner, extra folding chairs, iron and ironing board, etc.

From the living room you descend the circular staircase to the bedroom on the floor below (second floor European), which has its own separate entrance from the elevator lobby. This floor has a king-size platform bed with a fine, Japanese-style, futon mattress. An African folk mirror hangs above a chest with twenty-seven (!) drawers, offering lots of storage. There is also a downstairs closet in the entry hall by the bathroom.

This recently renovated, tiled bathroom is larger than the one on the floor above, with a newly designed, spacious walk-in shower, generous cabinetry, large mirror, slate flooring as well as a washer and dryer -  making it easy for you to do any necessary laundry during your stay.  Additional linens may be found stored in this area for your convenience.

The third floor bathroom is located off the entry hall and includes a toilet, sink, large shower and an over-scaled black Baroque mirror.

Back in the bedroom, you can write postcards or plug in your laptop at a curious writing desk from the 1940’s, although high-speed wireless internet access (WiFi) is available throughout the apartment.

Opposite the bed is the flat-screen TV, which has channels in many languages, including CNN International, BBC News, TCM (movie channel) and other English-language stations.  There is free long-distance telephone service to more than thirty countries.

NOTRE DAME AND THE LATIN QUARTER

Located equidistant to Nôtre Dame and the Place Maubert, the apartment is close to pharmacies, bakeries, dry cleaners, an excellent and friendly cheese shop (at the Place Maubert), wine shops, traditional and organic groceries, a copy shop, bookstores (including the famous English language bookstore, Shakespeare & Company), countless restaurants with all kinds of international cuisine and numerous art-house and first-run cinemas.

With three Métro stations, the RER train lines and many bus lines within close vicinity, the apartment is easily accessible to anywhere in the city and beyond. The RER train to both Orly and Charles De Gaulle Airports stops at the St. Michel metro station, just three blocks from the apartment. From this same station, you can catch the train to Versailles and many other destinations.

You can walk into the lively Latin Quarter, to the charming rue Mouffetard or to the islands in the Seine. Two blocks north of the apartment, you can catch a boat ride up and down the river. It is an easy walk across the Île Saint Louis into the Marais. Or you can take the river-level walk along the banks of the Seine west to the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay. Pack up the picnic basket provided with the apartment and take a picnic to the Luxembourg Gardens or the Jardin des Plantes or head east along the Seine (before you get to the Jardin des Plantes, in front of the University) to watch the break-dancers, tango dancers and capoeira artists who are out enjoying themselves every warm evening of the year on the banks of the river. The neighborhood is beautiful and lively, with loads to visit and a whole lot of shopping to do!

      GUESTS' COMMENTS

"We did Paris our way this time by renting this apartment and feeling like part of the neighborhood. Next time we’ll stay longer!” Linka Sobkowski (Bellingham, WA, USA)

"What a relaxing yet stimulating corner of Paris you have!  We would enjoy the delights of the city at our doorstep and retreat to this little sanctuary, where we’d enjoy movies and music after a dinner in one of the quartier’s many restaurants. The elevator made it possible for my stepmother (85) and my dad to enjoy their first trip to Paris. Merci mille fois!" – Kathleen Rahal

"What a wonderful city!!!  Our apartment provided everything we needed and more! I will miss this city and hopefully we’ll be back again. The decor is delightful – a credit to the owners. Will miss you, Rue des Trois Portes!!!" Christeen Kaluaat (West End, Australia)

"We very much enjoyed our stay at the Notre Dame apt. on rue des Trois Portes. It was a perfect setup for my husband and myself and our granddaughter, and we loved the location. We do love so many things about your wonderful apartment – being so close to the La Cite in the heart of the 5th arrondissement, the unique and beautiful furnishings. It is also very convenient to the university sites where we have our research contacts in Paris." Lia and Stan Bronsard (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada)

"I came to France with my son and sister for an adventure of a lifetime. And it is just that. I love it all, and especially the old worn spiral stairs. I love looking from the window as life each day begins slowly with a clean-up at 7 a.m. and unfolds at 10 a.m. into a hive of activity. I could live here for a long, long time. The history is wonderful, the cobbled streets I adore. I am 60, and I hope to come back. I want to feel the energy and romance that is Paris." Kaye Christensen (West End, Australia)

"Well situated, well appointed, a total delight from the lace curtains to the primitive artifacts, and a fabulously comfortable haven – a complete plaisir." Thank you, Sally Kellman (Alameda, CA, USA)

"If you want to be in the heart of Paris, stay here! Not only did the location give us easy access to so many key cultural landmarks, the surrounding neighborhood is also full of old world charm - and it's hip. This apartment accommodated all of our needs (the décor is beautiful and comfortable) – outside the door, an easy stroll to the river opens up to many delights. This is the place to stay with family or friends. Thank you – merci! We will always cherish our memories on the rue des Trois Portes!" Liz Keim (San Francisco, CA, USA)

"We are so sad to be leaving our little Paris retreat. This has been an amazing chance just to live the life Parisian, to wander and follow the rule of "If it looks interesting, explore it!" We would love to come back someday but hope that in the meantime that friends will follow our recomendation and share in the pleasures of Rue des Trois Portes." Kristy and Marc Hardman (Sydney, Australia)

"This was a great find! We've been here before, but I think I like this location best. It was always easy to find our way home - just look for Notre Dame!" David and Joanne Allan (Minneapolis, MN, USA)

"We are here with our two granddaughters - ages 14 and 15 - their first trip to Paris and are delighted with the choice we made to stay in an apartment rather than a hotel. I love the old beams, the light, the spacious bathrooms. Merci mille fois!" Ginger and Doug Keane (Boston, MA, USA)

"... We found it to be warm, inviting and a welcome safe haven at the end of the day when our feet and bodies would no longer propel us forward. It was decorated with much love - and beautifully appointed, having everything we needed. I loved the eclectic mix of artwork and objets d'art and books. Lovely! Thank you again, and perhaps one day we'll return again? If our 16 year old daughter has anything to say about it, we will!..." Phyllis, Peter and Savannah Hanson (Orlando, FL, USA)

"Very much enjoyed our stay in this apartment with all the art. Upstairs sleeper sofa very comfortable." Leonard and Judy Titus (Topeka, KS, USA)

"We found it quite reasonable, considering the alternative - two hotel rooms that would have been cold and cramped, most likely! We found the apartment spacious enough for the four of us. The two bathrooms are key! Your apartment was great, and we would go back in a second!" Donna Del Moro (New Jersey, USA)

"We would love to tell so many of our friends about this place, but on the other hand, we may keep it our little secret - as your apartment encompasses everything we could have asked for on our adventure in Paris! Thank you for opening up your home to us." Taylor and Carter Schmeek (California, USA)

"Merci beaucoup from four sad Aussies who are closing the door of No. 16, Rue des Trois Portes for the last time early this beautiful, sunny Paris morning!..  It’s been the best of locations, facilities, shops to restock for home dinners, metro, etc. etc.  Enjoyed eclectic collection of music and beautiful books.  Kitchen is great and beds comfy!  Thank you so much."  The Watchorns (Tasmania, Australia)

“Thank you for providing such a comfortable, clean apartment.  We love your well-equipped kitchen.  You have thought of every detail.  Like many others, we have enjoyed the whimsical décor.  Merci!”  Jean McKenzie Leiper (Canada)

“The apartment has the essential cooking/laundry needs for anyone.  We were able to have friends over for impromptu dinners as the table seated at least 8 people.  Well worth the cost.”  Dave and Kathy (West Hartford, CT, USA)

“After 30+ years of visiting Paris, we’ve seen a few apartments and hotel rooms – and 16 rue des Trois Portes was really a HIT!”  (Pat and Chris Wetherall (Sydney, Australia)

“The apartment is full of character & charm and the location is second to none.  Perfect for a family of four - like us. The kids loved it - their first time in Paris - our youngest daughter was so sad when we left she cried. You really can't get a better endorsement than that... We'll be back for sure - loved everything!” Andrew Birbeck (Ireland)

"We really enjoyed our anniversary / vacation accommodations.  Loved the CD collection.  Hot water, without end!"  Naomi Kaskie (Texas)

"The apartment is so nicely fitted out.  It has been a pleasure to stay here – in a straight line of walking to our project in the Marais.  Thank you – Steven Harvey (New York City)

"Bonjour!  Here in Paris is such a wonderful adventure!  Every morning, my mom, dad, and I have eaten croissants and palmiers. And since this apartment is so centrally located, it is very easy to find good places to eat.  Overall, our stay here in Paris was amazing!  Especially since we were able to stay in such a cool and awesome apartment.  Thank you!"  Lauren, Teri, Michael  (Irvine, California, USA)

"The apartment was in a fantastic location, just a very short walk to the River and of course Notre Dame. With so many cafes, restaurants and bars so close we were spoilt for choice. The apartment was everything as described with plenty of space. This is what we love about apartments, you could go home after a long day sightseeing knowing that you could put your feet up and really relax, looking out the windows, listening and watching life go by. Which is exactly what we were after. We loved having the dining table with room for six, we were able to have friends over and to sit, drink and talk. Having two bathrooms was great."  Susan McEwen (Australia)

"The notebook with tourist tips, especially restaurants and markets close to apt. was VERY helpful. The location was great. Excellent livable furnishings."  Margaret Parker (United States)
